Resetting a GFCI Receptacle

Ground fault circuit interrupter receptacle

A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet is designed to protect you from electrical shocks by shutting off power when it detects a ground fault. You’ll recognize it by the two buttons on the front labeled TEST and RESET.

If an outlet in your kitchen, bathroom, or garage suddenly stops working, it may just be a tripped GFCI outlet — and you can often fix it yourself in seconds. Here’s a quick step-by-step guide to get your power back on safely.

How to Reset a GFCI Outlet (Step-by-Step)

  1. Locate the GFCI Outlet

    • Check your kitchen, bathrooms, laundry room, garage, or outdoor outlets.

    • Look for the outlet with the TEST and RESET buttons.

  2. Unplug Any Devices

    • Unplug appliances or tools from the outlet and nearby outlets on the same circuit.

  3. Press the RESET Button

    • Push the RESET button firmly until you hear or feel it click.

    • This restores power to the outlet.

  4. Test for Power

    • Plug in a small lamp, charger, or GFCI tester to make sure the outlet is working.

    • If it doesn’t work, press the TEST button, then RESET again.

  5. Check Your Breaker Panel if Needed

    • If the GFCI still won’t reset, a breaker in your electrical panel might be tripped.

    • Flip the tripped breaker fully OFF, then back ON, and try again.

  6. Call a Professional if It Still Won’t Reset

    • If the outlet trips immediately or won’t reset at all, there may be a wiring issue or a bad outlet that needs replacement.

    • Contact Dynamic Electric a licensed electrician to inspect and repair it safely.
